Welcome To ASHRAE Houston

ASHRAE, founded in 1894, is a global society advancing human well-being through sustainable technology for the built environment. The Society and its members focus on building systems, energy efficiency, indoor air quality, refrigeration and sustainability within the industry. Through research, standards writing, publishing and continuing education, ASHRAE shapes tomorrow’s built environment today.

ASHRAE is a remarkable organization. The worldwide membership of 56,500 take responsibility for the comfort and safety of the built environment by advancing the arts and sciences of heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration.  ASHRAE strives to serve humanity and promote a sustainable world by raising money for research which is used to create definitive technical and educational information.  The whole world uses the handbooks, guidelines, standards training courses and other numerous publications created by this group of dedicated volunteers.  Please learn more about ASHRAE Society by visiting www.ashrae.org/about-ashrae.

ASHRAE is a grass roots organization that has a Society, Regional and Chapter structure.  Society responds to industry needs through proposed changes introduced by Chapter members through the Regional structure.  Chapters support Society by raising money for research, promoting membership, educating all levels of government and creating student activities.

Houston has one of the largest ASHRAE chapters with approximately 800 assigned Society members.  The chapter is led by a Board of Directors and Committee Chairs.  Committees include:

  • Chapter Technology Transfer
  • Research Promotion
  • Membership Promotion
  • Historical
  • Student Activities/ K-12 STEM
  • Young Engineers in ASHRAE
  • Attendance/Reception
  • Grassroots and Government Advocacy
  • Honors and Awards
  • Sustainability
  • Refrigeration
  • Commissioning
  • Electronic Communication / Social Media
  • Women in ASHRAE
  • Newsletter

Society expects the Houston Chapter to lead because of the size of its membership and its large HVAC market.  The Board of Directors takes this responsiblity very seriously as demonstrated by the following metrics:

  • Raised almost $200,000 for Research Promotion in 2017/18
  • Held nine chapter meetings with an average attendace of 100 people
  • Active Young Engineers and Women Engineers program
  • Numerous site tours
  • Sponsored a team in the Society student competition
  • Supports three student branches
  • Provided $5,000 in scholorships
  • Developed many chapter officers who served at Region and Society

Mission Statement

ASHRAE Houston’s mission is to serve the local air conditioning and refrigeration community, working to fill their overall needs with networking opportunities, educational resources, and industry certifications.

ASHRAE Houston will support its members, while seeking to expand membership, with programs and committee involvement throughout the year, fueled by our officers and committee chairs who are committed to delivering exceptional membership value.

To be known and recognized as the best ASHRAE chapter regionally and nationally.

President's Message

The ASHRAE Houston Chapter is blessed with exceptional officers and committee chairs for 2018/19.  Region is supporting us with many leaders from the Houston chapter including the Regional Director and Chair (DRC), Treasurer, and Resource Promotion.  Finances are very healthy, many young members are participating and great benefit is received from chapter membership.

The ASHRAE Houston Chapter must take advantage of its many strengths to better serve members who work for consulting engineers and owners.  This constituency's lack of participation has been noticed.  The chapter can re-engage consulting engineers and owners by creating a community of knowledge based upon ASHRAE's technical and educational information.  The chapter must also recognize that Houston's size makes electronic participation necessary to many meeting events.

My vision for this year is:

Increase membership activity.

Many people in the HVAC industry know that ASHRAE publishes books, magazines, handbooks and standards.  Many people also wish they had time to read these publications.  They know that the information would make them better at their jobs and ensure their projects are designed properly.  The Houston chapter needs to make it easy for people to learn ASHRAE's technical information. The benefits of pursuing this vision are:

  • Increased membership
  • Increased participation
  • More money raised for research promotion
  • Professional development hours for participants

Chapter objectives for 2018/19 will help achieve the vision:

Objective #1 - Increase Chapter Active Membership via Increased Volunteers and/or Increased RP Contribution from Previous Years

Objective #2 - Broadcast Chapter Meetings as a Webinar

Objective #3 - Update the Houston Chapter Website to a Modern Appearance and Mobil Friendly

Objective #4 - Update the Houston Chapter Bylaws to Accurately Relect the Timeline for Election Process

Objective #5 - Compete for the Region VIII Golden Gavel Award

Objective #6 - Have all Chapter officers Participate in a K-12 Presentation and Activity

Please share my vision of a Houston HVAC community that values learning ASHRAE technical information and supports ASHRAE's research initiatives.  Here is how you can participate:

Attend monthly chapter meetings on the Third Wednesday of the month at the HESS club from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm.  January is a dinner recognizing our past presidents at HESS.  March is our annual Student Night which is usually held in the evening – this year’s location is still TBD.  HESS club is at 5430 Westheimer Rd, Houston, TX 77056.  Our Chapter Technology Transfer Chair, Kurt McCuloch is preparing a fabulous slate of programs that will enhance all participant's knowledge.

Participate in Research Promotion events.  Greg Tinkler is organizing Sporting Clays, Fall Golf Tournament, Poker Tournament and Spring Golf Tournament.  Be sure to thank our Annual Sponsors and make your own donation. Rest assured that every dollar you give ASHRAE is used for either Research Projects or our Damon Gowan Houston Scholarship Endowment.  The research is used to create the handbooks, standards and guidelines you use every day. Also,  ASHRAE sends back several dollars to our Region for research programs at local universities.

Be aware of Student Activities' continuing work with the TAMU, HCC, and Lamar student chapter and the K-12 STEM activities.  The chapter has a STEM kit which can be borrowed by any member (for a small deposit) to take to a local school’s science fair, career day, or just special activity in the classroom.  If any members volunteer at their child’s school at a science fair judging or career day – or if you talk to a class about ASHRAE please let our student activates chair know.

Get involved during E-week, February 17-23, 2019 with numerous opportunities at the K-12 and college level.

Follow the chapter on Twitter, Facebook, Linked-in, and Instagram to get all event details and updates.

Make sure you receive the product directory and roster that is updated in the winter and is provided electronically to all Houston chapter members.  If your information is correct and updated on ashrae.org, we have your correct information.  Please reach out to our Membership chairs if your information needs updating.

Upgrade your membership.  Many people are still associates who could possibly be upgraded to member – there is not a dues increase.   See October 2018 HAR for more info.

We look forward to seeing you at all of our events in the upcoming year as we come together to promote our industry, educate one another about ASHRAE technical information and raise funds for Research and Scholarships.  A special thank you to all the Board of Governors, Committee Chairs and members, and other volunteers.  Please feel free to leave any comments or suggestions on the  email address.  We will respond to all friendly emails as quickly as possible.
